Robert Mugabe:
I support Chelsea
Despot loves Barcelona too
TYRANT Robert Mugabe is a Chelsea fan, it was revealed yesterday.
The Zimbabwean president reportedly spoke of his love for the new European champions in a chat with African players.
Mugabe, 88, told former Zimbabwe captain Benjani Mwaruwari: “I am a Chelsea and Barcelona supporter and I always want them to score.”
The dictator said he was a keen football fan who demanded quiet when he watched big games on TV.
He said: “When I watch soccer, I do not want anyone to disturb me. Even my wife knows where to sit because while they are scoring in the field I will also be scoring at home, kicking everything in front of me. I have scored a lot of goals at my home, but I can only remember scoring once during the days we played a lot of football as I grew up.
“It was rather fortunate, too. I just hit the ball towards goal and the goalkeeper was poor so it went in.”
Mugabe met players in Harare for a testimonial game for Portsmouth striker Benjani, 33, the New Zimbabwe website reported.
The stars included Senegal’s El Hadji Diouf, Nigeria’s Nwankwo Kanu, and Ghana’s John Pantsil.
Mugabe — who has led Zimbabwe since 1980 — has orchestrated a string of human rights abuses to cling to power.
